Whilst working at AKQA, we got the opportunity to work with the government organisation MBIE to create a new website for Employment New Zealand. This is a part of government that specialise in providing information and support for employers and workers, covering all stages of employment.
One of the most important principles which clearly influenced the final design was the concept of providing guided experiences to specific audience groups. However we had to balance this idea alongside needing to ensure workers were able to see employer content, and therefore break down barriers and enable more healthy conversations.
These ideas have been executed through an audience-based pathfinder component, as well as a shared IA which is modelled after the employment lifecycle. This means users are able to dive deep into content that’s relevant to them, but once they get there they can easily discover what the employers version of this information looks like as it’s within the same area.
We identified that it was crucial that we fully understood all the needs of the various audience groups that this website caters to. To help with this we organised a series of co-design sessions where we gathered valuable insights which guided the design process, and started important conversations within the project team, and externally within the MBIE organisation.
